A White Dress and a Green Theme

Once you commit to a “green wedding” there are a multitude of planning considerations. Everything you buy or rent for your ceremony, from wedding favors to caterers, has an environmental impact. Fortunately, there are many ideas, tactics, and strategies for reducing the carbon load your wedding will generate.

First off, you can limit the guest list. However, shortening your guest list can be a touchy part of your wedding planning. The best approach is to notify family members and friends that you prefer a small wedding and then remain steadfast and stick to it.

Next you need to select a venue. Give strong thought to holding the wedding at a banquet hall or farm that provides organic catering. That means they do not have petrochemicals in any of their ingredients. This helps the environment, supports green businesses, and sends a clear message to your guests about your eco consciousness and concerns. You should also try to pick a venue that is close to as many guests as possible. This will reduce carbon consumption and emissions.

Think frugally when it comes to the décor and wedding favors. You don’t need to waste the money or material to throw a Platinum wedding. Eco-invites should definitely be part of the plan. You can have beautiful professionally designed invitations that are made of recycled materials or that are produced free of tree matter. Gifts are probably the easiest way to go green. Sign up with companies that offer green registries. Put eco-friendly items on your wish list, such as a solar cooker. Request organic linens or home made craft items that you can use for decorating your home. Gifts for the bride and groom don’t have to be tangible. Instead of accepting checks or cash, have an electronic account available so guests can transfer their paperless gifts.

Spend the time to do your homework, check out magazines, and search online sources for green weddings. For an eco-friendly wedding, get your spouse-to-be and guests on the learning curve to going green. Get married with a clear conscious and a rewarding feeling!
